Write one brief for every bidder

Compare dock and boat lift quotes. Lesson 1, 14 min.

Send the same brief to each supplier. If each bidder prices a different job, you cannot compare the totals.

What the brief contains

  • The result in plain words: how the boat berths, how people board and how the team services the system.
  • The boat, with the builder's weight information and the dimensions.
  • How you use the waterfront and what you want to change.
  • A boundary survey, if you have one, with its date.
  • Known utilities and access limits.

Ask each bidder to list the information that they still need before design.

Functions and preferences

Keep required functions apart from preferences. A safe boarding route is a function. A deck colour is a preference. Ask bidders to explain each design choice that changes the footprint, the operating limits or the maintenance needs.

Plan movement first

Draw how people go from the house to the boat, where they carry bags and where they wait during boarding. Mark the service route for repairs. Keep the boarding route clear of seating and storage. Do these checks before you make a furniture plan.

Mark assumptions

Mark each assumption about the boat, depth, weather exposure and services. Online tools can help you explore a layout. The PrivateDock design guide, checked on 2026-10-29, names EZ Dock Designer, ShoreMaster Dock Builder and SketchUp. Their output is a concept. It does not confirm bed conditions, structural loads, boundaries or permission.
